See my painting at the 2026 Sussex Contemporary this November
I’m delighted that my painting Cordoarias Garden has been selected for Sussex Contemporary 2026. The exhibition takes place in the BN9 Studios space at Marine Workshops, Newhaven, this November, with the theme ‘Shelter’.
I chose to enter this painting as I felt that this piece fitted the theme of Shelter really well. We were right in the middle of Porto in Portugal, a vibrant city and it had been a long day of photographing and looking. It was about four in the afternoon and we were weary and hot. Walking around cities can be exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. We tend to wander in a free style way with no particular direction so when we came to this garden in the middle of Porto we both suddenly felt a release. The light was beautiful and dappled. We stepped out of the bustle and heat and into a coolness that felt very chilled. People were slowing down and sitting, some lying on benches. There were nearby cafés too where I ended up donating to the cafe owner a sketch of his cafe.
We discovered several gardens in Porto on this trip and each one gave us a break from the speed of the city and the heat. The gardens were new and old but all had beautiful trees that took the temperature down by several degrees. We now look for cities that have gardens so that we can visit, photograph and relax.
The Sussex is a major annual showcase of art by contemporary artists and the flagship annual exhibition of selected works by Sussex Contemporary. The artworks have been selected by a panel of judges, all leading industry figures. The exhibition is free to visit and welcome all ages, supporting Sussex’s vibrant cultural community, all set within a historic 1882 building with panoramic views across the Sussex coast.
